SHOT Show® Opens at Sands Expo Center in Las Vegas

SHOT ShowThe 37th Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade ShowSM (SHOT Show®) opened this morning at the Sands Expo Center for a four-day run, January 20-23, welcoming an expected 60,000 industry professionals eager to see the latest products offered by the firearms and outdoor industry.

Owned and sponsored by the National Shooting Sports Foundation®, the trade association for the firearms, ammunition, hunting and shooting sports industry, the SHOT Show is the largest trade show of its kind in the world. The show provides buyers and media a first look at new equipment and services used for target shooting, hunting, outdoor and law enforcement purposes. The show is open to trade members only and not to the public; consumers will see the products unveiled here on retailers’ shelves during the course of the year.

Though firearm sales last year were less than in red-hot 2013, the $8 billion industry nevertheless posted one of its strongest showings ever. Background checks, which serve as an indicator of firearm sales, totaled more in 2014 more than in any year except record-setting 2013. The market for firearms, ammunition and accessories remains strong, with statistics showing more people going target shooting and hunting.

Women continue to pursue owning firearms, motivated by interests in personal and home protection as well as recreational shooting. During the show, NSSF will release a new report on “Women Gun Owners: Purchasing, Perceptions and Participation.” One of the report’s findings reveals that more than half of women (55.6 percent) who participated in the study saying they intend to purchase at least one firearm in the next 12 months.

The industry notes that violent crime continues to decline even as Americans purchase firearms in record numbers, underscoring that more guns do not lead to more crime, as anti-gun groups inaccurately claim.

“Our industry continues to see new and different customers embrace firearms ownership and the shooting sports,” said NSSF President and CEO Steve Sanetti. “New gun owners—someone who has purchased their first firearm in the last five years—represent about a quarter of the total, and they are younger, female, urban/suburban-based and from many ethnic backgrounds.

“These new participants,” added Sanetti, “are altering people’s perceptions of who firearm owners are and what they look like. It’s very gratifying to see the broad-based appeal of our sports and culture. As an industry, we are determined not only to provide people with excellent gear to enjoy recreational shooting but also to deter legislation intended to burden law-abiding gun owners and provide appropriate safety and educational materials to help deter unauthorized access to firearms.”

For the sixth year in a row, SHOT Show will take place at the Sands Expo Center, whose many improvements—including a remodeled, natural light-filled lobby to additional food courts and Wi-Fi hotspots—have drawn widespread approval from attendees. The show is the largest event hosted at Sands Expo Center, and during its run injects $90 million in non-gaming revenue to the Las Vegas economy.

SHOT Show attracts buyers from all 50 states and more than 100 countries. Hosting more than 1,600 exhibiting companies, the show floor exceeds 630,000 net square feet—equivalent to more than 13 acres or the area covered by the Great Pyramid at Giza. Some 12.5 miles of aisles lead to displays of a wide range of products, including firearms, ammunition, gun safes, locks and cases, optics, shooting range equipment, targets, training and safety equipment, hunting accessories, law enforcement equipment, hearing and eye protection, tree stands, scents and lures, cutlery, GPS systems, holsters, apparel, leather goods, game calls and decoys.

“We’re coming off our largest and most successful show last year—a bar we welcome and hope to exceed with the 2015 SHOT Show. Our goal each year is to provide our customers with their finest SHOT Show experience ever,” said Chris Dolnack, NSSF Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer.

On the first evening of the show, NSSF will present its State of the Industry Dinner, where an audience of more than 2,000 will learn about NSSF achievements in the past year and be entertained by Las Vegas headliner Bill Engvall.

Major sponsors of the 2015 SHOT Show include Outdoor Channel, Daniel Defense, GunBroker.com, Brownell’s, Gamo Outdoor USA, Georgia Department of Economic Development, Mossy Oak, Trijicon, Smith & Wesson and Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, among others. Ram Truck Brand is the official truck of the SHOT Show. Nissan is sponsor of the show’s press room.

The show brings together all segments of one of America’s oldest and most storied industries–manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers, shooting range operators, outdoor media and representatives from wildlife conservation groups.

Outdoor media turns out in force to cover the introduction of products and to report on the firearms and outdoor industry. NSSF has credentialed 2,500 media members for the show. On the day prior to SHOT Show, Industry Day at the Range provides invited media and buyers an opportunity to test and learn more about new products. SHOT Show will again feature Radio Row, where major conservative radio hosts broadcast live.

In a longstanding tradition, SHOT Show provides a full lineup of professional development opportunities for attendees. Sold out is SHOT Show University, where firearm retailers can learn about new marketing strategies and compliance with federal regulations. Law enforcement professionals have their own series of education seminars.

SHOT Show is the year’s “must-attend” event for industry professionals. Anyone with an interest in the show and new industry products can learn more www.shotshow.org or by following the show’s news on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and YouTube.

Trade Show Checklist for Professionals

Business Card TradeA polished professional image is helpful and important when developing new client relationships and representing yourself among colleagues. Here are some of the top items on my checklist for maintaining professionalism at the SHOT Show.

  1. Business Cards – First impressions mean a lot when you are meeting potential clients and colleagues. A great way to initialize your professional image is by presenting a business card for them to see what you do. Business cards also assist in remembering names.
  2. Sanitizer – Like an interview, a good handshake is another important asset to a good introduction. The SHOT Show brings a lot of business opportunities, but it can also bring unwanted illness.
  3. Pen/Pad – Taking notes shows that you really care and are paying attention.
  4. Mouthwash – Bad breath can be a big negative. Not only is it unpleasant, but it is distracting. It also helps you clear your teeth of unwanted debris (i.e., spinach, chocolate, etc.).
  5. Phone – Your phone can be your lifeline at the show. Access the SHOT Show Blog, SHOT Mobile App, social media and clients’ websites.
  6. Business Formal/Casual Dress – It is important to dress appropriately both in and out of the show. You never know if you will meet a potential client in a casual setting outside of the show.
  7. Comfortable Shoes – Sore feet are uncomfortable and distracting. The SHOT Show has approximately 12.5 miles of aisles, so it is important to wear comfortable shoes.
  8. Deodorant – The SHOT Show should smell like guns and roses…
  9. Water – Stay hydrated. Being dehydrated can lead to head aches and loss of focus.
  10. Food – A convenient snack like a granola bar, candy bar or apple can help you stay focused on the show, rather than on your grumbling stomach. Meetings can build up quickly along with your appetite if you forget to pack a snack.

I never go to a professional conference or trade event without these items. Being prepared is a huge aspect of professionalism, and this list can give you a head start. These items can enhance your professional appearance, but remember, a professional image relies heavily on professional behavior, as well.

Two Newest Speakers to SHOT Show University to Address Veteran Retailer Needs

Our world is constantly changing, and today’s modern firearms dealer is anything but immune to those changes. Demographics shift, purchasing abilities go up and down and trends come and go—and if you’re not making the necessary adjustments to meet those challenges, your product is going to sit on your shelves and your business is going to suffer.

This is precisely why NSSF has an educational track devoted exclusively to driving sales in its SHOT Show University Lineup. We’ve already told you about expert business professionals Larry Mersereau and Gene Marks, scheduled to speak on topics such as digital marketing and market differentiation and content marketing. Now NSSF has added well-known firearms retailing veterans Doug VanderWoude and Miles Hall to the Drive Your Sales Lineup as the featured speakers for the all-important Power Promotions session.

In this session, VanderWoude and Hall will show retailers how to drive sales and increase margins and turns with a number of unique promotional ideas that the pair have developed over their combined 60-plus years of experience in the firearms industry.

“It’s not often the an FFL dealer gets to engage with successful, veteran retailers like Doug and Miles,” said Randy Clark, NSSF Managing Director, Business Development. “Not only do these have the ‘street cred’ to speak on what works, they have the profitable and long-standing successful businesses to back them up. Having gone through innumerable ups and downs during their tenure in the firearms business and come out ahead, their insight into what works and what doesn’t should prove invaluable to today’s retailers.”

Doug VanderWoude is a 32-year veteran of the retail firearms industry, having spent 29 of those years behind a gun counter. He started a firearms retail store with an indoor shooting range from scratch and was a charter member of the industry’s first performance group. He is a current and active member of the NSSF Range Committee. Today, VanderWoude is a firearms retail and range consultant who has visited more than 190 firearms retail facilities in the past 38 months. He has worked with multiple firearms companies on proven nationwide promotions that drive consumers into ranges, and he spends many of his days helping other firearms retailers improve traffic flow inside their stores and increase profitability.

Miles Hall is Founder and President of H&H Shooting Sports Complex in Oklahoma City. Started in 1981, H&H is a community educational and retail complex with a focus on developing and promoting shooting sports. The current facility houses 61 shooting lanes for Olympic air rifle and pistol, standard pistol, high-power rifle, and archery. H&H has been ranked as a top 10 dealer by the majority of major manufacturers in the shooting sports. Hall is a founding member and serves as past president of the Association of Shooting Ranges, is a founding member of the Association of Firearm Retailers, and a past board member of the National Shooting Sports Foundation. He was named 2004 Retailer of the Year by Shot Business Magazine. H&H was also selected for that magazine’s Range of the Year honor in 2006 and was the first facility to receive NSSF’s prestigious Five Star Range Rating. Inc. Magazine has selected H&H as one of the fastest growing, privately held business in the United States for the last seven years and is the only gun dealer ever on that list for four of those years.

SHOT Show University is the premier event for firearms retailers. Seats are limited and this event will sell out, so retailers are urged to sign up now. Remember, NSSF Premium Retailers are offered a complimentary ticket to SHOT Show University. Additional tickets for both Premium Retailer members and all other NSSF members who wish to attend is $250; non-members may attend for $500. SHOT Show Auctions Yield More Than $90,000 in Support of Outdoor Traditions

One-of-a-kind tribute to Henry rifle designer B. Tyler Henry, first-ever Doug Turnbull Restoration 1911 pistol and a “1 of 1” Buck Knives 50th Anniversary 110 Folding Hunter generated $90,376 in support of America’s hunting and shooting sports heritage.

Powered by nearly 150,000 views and hundreds of bids on GunBroker.com, the 2014 SHOT Show Auction of two historical firearms and a one-of-a-kind engraved knife generated $90,376 in support of America’s hunting and shooting sports heritage.

The 2014 auction on GunBroker.com featured a one-of-a-kind Tribute to Henry rifle designer B. Tyler Henry, the first-ever Doug Turnbull Restoration 1911 pistol and a “1 of 1” Buck Knives 110 Folding Hunter in commemoration of that knife’s 50th anniversary.

When the GunBroker.com gavel sounded on the final afternoon of the SHOT Show, the high bid on the Henry Tribute Rifle was $50,825; the Turnbull 1911 high bid was $36,025 and Buck 110 Folding Hunter attracted a high bid of $3,526.

The Henry rifle was a presentation grade Original Henry, marking the first production of the Original Henry rifle design in 150 years. The gun was engraved as a tribute to B. Tyler Henry, who designed the iconic rifle in 1860. The engraving featured a likeness of Mr. Henry of the right side of the receiver and a representation of the original factory on the left. The rifle was engraved by the artisans at Baron Engraving. Baron has engraved more SHOT Show firearms than any other engraver or manufacturer.

“We were honored to have this tribute to B. Tyler Henry selected as the 2014 SHOT Show auction rifle and were proud when the bidding reached $50,825 on the final day of the show,” announced Henry Repeating Arms CEO, Anthony Imperato. “We are grateful to NSSF for this opportunity, to GunBroker.com for providing extraordinary bidding activity and, of course, to the high bidder who will be adding this special rifle to his collection,” Imperato said.

Turnbull Manufacturing Company, the iconic restorer of vintage rifles and shotguns, has recently aimed their manufacturing and design skills on the production of high-quality handguns. The SHOT Show Auction handgun was the first Deluxe Model of the new Turnbull 1911 Classic and featured Serial Number 1911001.

The Buck Knives 50th Anniversary Model 110 Folding Hunter created by legendary knife maker David Yellowhorse was the fifth Buck knife that has been featured as a SHOT Show auction knife.

The 2014 Buck SHOT Show knife celebrated the 110’s prominence in the hearts and hands of America’s outdoorsmen.

The SHOT Show auction is administered by the Hunting Heritage Trust on behalf of the National Shooting Sports Foundation. The 2014 auction marked the 11th consecutive year that the auction was featured exclusively on GunBroker.com, the world’s largest internet auction site for firearms and related outdoor equipment. Auction proceeds will benefit programs in support of America’s hunting and shooting sports heritage.

SHOT Business Honors 8 Industry Leaders

Tom Gresham, left and Mark Malkowski, right. Malkowski, president of Stag Arms, was honored with Person of the Year award.

At the Bonnier Outdoor Group breakfast yesterday morning, SHOT Business honored eight industry leaders. The honorees were Bass Pro Shops, Chain Retailer of the Year; SportsSouth, Distributor of the Year; CorBon/Glaser, Company of The Year; Game Masters of Quincy, Illinois, Independent Retailer of the Year; Colonial Shooting Academy, Richmond, Virginia, Range of the Year; Randell Pence of Sturm, Ruger, Sales Representative of the Year; and Mark Malkowski, president of Stag Arms, Person of the Year. In addition, the Bonnier Outdoor Group Special Achievement Award was given the NSSF president Steve Sanetti.

“The SHOT Business awards recognize and acknowledge leadership in the shooting sports industry. Simply put, the winners of these awards represent the best in this business,” said Slaton L. White, editor of SHOT Business.

Bass Pro Shops owner John Morris accepted the Chain Retailer of the Year Award and shared heartfelt thanks with the audience for recognition of the company’s many efforts to promote safe and responsible hunting and shooting.

“Thank you for everything you do to stand up and preserve and promote the future of the shooting sports and the outdoors. Our company is a lot more than just retail, and that comes from loving to hunt and fish and having a passion for the outdoors,” Morris said. Mark Malkowski, president of Stag Arms, was awarded the Person of the Year award for vigorously defending the firearms and shooting industry in the wake of the tragic school shooting in Connecticut last year, but he gave most of the credit to the NSSF.

“I wouldn’t have received this award if it hadn’t been for the NSSF. Those guys deserved to be up there with me,” Malkowski said. “They were the ones that supported me tirelessly throughout the whole experience.”

NSSF got special recognition of its own when White presented Sanetti, with the Bonnier Outdoor Group Special Achievement Award

“All I did this year was to tell the truth about this great industry, and you all make that easy to do,” Sanetti said. “There are so many people in the industry that have done so much this year or have been under fire successfully. I’m just so proud and honored to be in the forefront, helping tell the story about the industry and get the word out that we’re a great bunch of people and we do great things and we’re not going to be knocked down by lies and misrepresentations about who we are. We represent a great bunch of Americans doing constitutionally protected things in a responsible way. And we’re going to keep on doing that.”

NSSF President Steve Sanetti’s remarks at the SHOT Show’s annual State of the Industry event

Remarks by Steve Sanetti, NSSF President and CEO, at the State of the Industry Dinner at SHOT Show on Tuesday, Jan. 14:

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen.

A year ago, we met in the shadow of a horrifying event that shook America to its core.

A lot of soul-searching needed to be done, and was done.

In the light of an unprecedented gun-control push by this administration, advocacy groups, and the media, it was thought by many that emotion would triumph over facts and logic.

We were called every name in the book.

This industry and its law-abiding, responsible customers responded respectfully and thoughtfully to some of the most outrageous attacks upon us.

The determination to make our case known to all those interested in the truth was overwhelming and extremely gratifying.

A look around this room will show one of the finest assemblages of the American spirit we will ever see.

We rely upon you to win this fight.

If our industry doesn’t have the integrity, the passion, and the determination to stand up for the law-abiding citizens of this great nation, then we are finished.

But we’re not finished! … Not by a long shot.

In fact, our message of thoughtful criticism of well-meant but ineffective proposals to thwart the lawless elements of our society by heaping even more restrictions upon hunters, target shooters, collectors, and those seeking to lawfully defend their families, has resonated with the American public.

Not only has support for these wrongly-directed gun control proposals returned to pre-Newtown levels, but  we have seen record numbers of Americans from all walks of life flock to the side of lawful firearms ownership.

WE HAVE WEATHERED THE STORM.

Now, this has been the result of a lot of hard work and dedicated efforts by a lot of good people.

To borrow a now-famous phrase, “We didn’t do it alone.”

But we at the NSSF, our board of governors, and our entire industry, embarked on what many thought was an extremely ambitious, perhaps overly-ambitious, or even an unachievable goal five years ago—

“To increase participation in hunting and the shooting sports by 20 percent by the year 2014.”

Let’s see how we’ve done, working together as never before, in the face of overt hostility by those who see no value in the lawful enjoyment of responsible firearms ownership or a day afield or at the range with family and friends.

We know those joys —and our efforts to include others is having a profound effect upon participation in the shooting sports.

Consider these facts, comparing 2008 to 2013:

–Hunting license sales are up, led by a million new apprentice hunting licenses issued pursuant to the Families Afield and TrailBlazer Programs, themselves up 223 percent.

–Our firearms retailer survey also shows sales trends strongly up
from 2008 to 2011.

And since 2006, hunter expenditures have grown 55 percent.

“Hunting Works for America” is a strong coalition of businesses that directly benefit from these expenditures, giving local economies a healthy boost in revenues in these past five economically troubled years.

That’s over a million American jobs, and $67 million added to the economy each year.

–A nationwide scientific survey by Responsive Management shows that 79 percent of Americans over age 17 approve of hunting, up five percent in just two years to the highest level since 1995; and hunting participation is up nine percent since 2006, reversing a decades-long decline, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Total days of hunting went up 28 percent during this period, and the number of women hunters surged by 25 percent between 2006 and 2011, according to the census bureau.

–National Instant Criminal Background Checks for new firearms sold at retail are up over 53 percent.

Federal excise tax revenues on the sales of new firearms and ammunition, used to conserve all species of wildlife, shot up from $309 million in 2008 to almost $644 million in 2012, over a 100 percent increase, with 2013 on track to do even better.

Sportsmen remain the single largest contributors to conservation in America, with funds coming from every cartridge or firearm or hunting license sold.

–Membership in the NSSF is up 71 percent, to over 10,000, despite the fact that currently only 25 percent of exhibitors are members, and NSSF’s First Shots participants are up 23 percent.

–Skeet shooting and sporting clays are up 26 percent, with an increase of 27 percent in scholastic clay target program participants.

–Defensive pistol shooting course participation is up 57 percent.

–Persons holding concealed carry licenses are up 32 percent nationwide.

–National Wild Turkey Federation programs are up 70 percent.

–Outdoor Adventures and Youth hunts are up an astonishing 100 percent, and 4-H Shooting Sports activities are up 169 percent.

THERE ARE SO MANY POSITIVE THINGS TO SAY ABOUT THE STATE OF THE SHOOTING SPORTS IN AMERICA TODAY!

–“Pull the Trigger,” our extremely popular and informative short how-to-do-it video clips on the NSSF website, has gone from nothing to over one million email addresses each month—I suppose that’s a one million percent increase!

–Our “Analysis of Sport Shooting Participation trends in the U.S. 2008-2012” shows that over 40 million Americans now enjoy target shooting, up 17 percent since 2009.

Twenty percent of all target shooters first started participating during the last five years.

These participants are younger, more female and more urban-based, coinciding with the surge in firearms sales that began in 2008 — 40 CONSECUTIVE month’s sales growth.

While self-defense was a key motivation for 76 percent of these sales, right behind that was the desire to participate in shooting activities with family and friends, cited by 73 percent of first-time gun buyers.

Women target shooters have also increased by 34 percent, according to the National Sporting Goods Association.

These represent the future of our industry and shooting sports in America.

The NSSF range partnership program has helped upgrade over 100 shooting ranges nationwide.

More ranges have received our coveted Five Star rating.

And our “Where to Shoot” app has been a big hit with iPhone and Android users, at one point soaring up to the number four spot of all free sports apps with more than 100,000 downloads.

Our Collegiate Shooting Sports Initiative has also grown since 2008, from nothing to over 100 participating colleges and universities.

These are just some of the statistics we’ve gathered on the successful efforts of so many groups, and so many of you, to keep our recreational shooting sports vital and growing.

Time doesn’t permit me to mention all of you who have given so much so successfully to our cause, but you have the profound thanks of our entire industry and the recreational shooting sports community.

So, ladies and gentlemen, as we gather tonight, the State of Our Industry is renewed.

More persons are entering the recreational shooting sports than ever before.

More hunters, more target shooters, more women, more diverse groups, more licensed gun owners, and, as you all know, more firearms sales.

Perhaps the best news of all is that, despite tremendous increases in these numbers, violent crime with firearms has decreased dramatically during the last five years, to early 1960s levels;

and accidents with firearms have dropped 22 percent, now accounting for less than one percent of all fatal accidents in this country, according to the National Safety Council.

Voluntary industry safety programs such as Project ChildSafe’s 36 million free lock and safety package giveaways to over 15,000 communities have undoubtedly helped.

And we are pledged to continue these efforts.

So be proud of the contributions you are making.

Be proud of our young people, like the Olympic shooters we are honored to have with us tonight.

Be proud of your NSSF staff, which works so hard every day for you to promote, protect, and preserve hunting and the shooting sports.

Be proud of all the volunteer hunter and firearms safety instructors who work so hard to keep a safe sport safe.

Be proud of all those who take the time to take a new person to the range.

Be proud that the excise taxes you all pay every time you buy any firearm or ammunition contribute billions of dollars a year to conserve wildlife, game and non-game species alike.

And finally, be proud that you are keeping our nation strong by keeping a precious American tradition of personal responsibility and safety and security alive for future generations.

For ours is a precious legacy enjoyed by no other society on the face of the earth.

As we begin a new year and set new goals for the next five years, we stand on the shoulders of giants — and we will not let them down.

Thank you.
