IWA Show Connects U.S. Firearms Manufacturers to European Market

iwa_outdoor_clasics_2015_For many years, the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) has exhibited at the annual IWA & Outdoor Classics show in Nurnberg, Germany. It is always a productive event for us, but none more so than the 2015 show.

There are many reasons why exhibiting at the IWA & Outdoor Classics is a top priority for us here at NSSF, but perhaps the most important is that it provides us the ability to connect one on one with international buyers, exhibitors and media. These industry professionals have been key to the continued success of our own state-side SHOT Show® and they hold the promise for continued growth as they and our U.S. based members explore the hundreds of opportunities for those on both sides of the pond to do business together.

NSSF’s SHOT Show is the largest trade show of its kind in the world.  With more than 1,600 exhibitors showcasing the latest innovations in firearms, ammunition and shooting and hunting-related accessories, in addition to a thriving exhibitors section catering specifically to military and law enforcement applications, the annual SHOT Show attracts more than 60,000 industry professionals from all 50 U.S. states and 100 countries.

With such worldwide appeal, NSSF began working with the U.S. Department of Commerce International Buyer Program (IBP). Introduced at the 2014 SHOT Show, the inaugural IBP had just a half-dozen participating countries, yet it was so successful at connecting those European firms and buyers with their U.S. counterparts that word quickly spread about the program’s value.  The 2015 SHOT Show IBP grew to representatives from 20 countries. I don’t have to tell you that’s tremendous growth for a program still in its infancy—and that’s a trend we’re committed to continuing with the 2016 SHOT Show and beyond.

To further help this effort, our partners in Las Vegas have hosted a Las Vegas Hospitality Suite during IWA.  Sponsored by the Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority and the Las Vegas Sands and Venetian/Palazzo, the hospitality suite offers buyers and media an opportunity to learn more about the SHOT Show, the exciting city of Las Vegas and the fabulous Sands Expo and Venetian/Palazzo resorts in which the SHOT Show takes place.  Hundreds of visitors stop by our stand daily in the American pavilion to inquire about NSSF membership, SHOT Show attendee qualifications and how the International Buyer Program (IBP) works to connect European buyers with U.S. firearms enterprises.  Many of these buyers have never heard of the SHOT Show and are overwhelmed with the prospects in which they may encounter in Las Vegas each year.  It is this introduction to the SHOT Show that makes us most excited when we are at IWA, and proves the value of face-to-face marketing at trade shows.

There are three components to the IBP. These include the Showtime Program, where U.S.-based show exhibitors can meet one on one with U.S. Department of Commerce industry specialists from our overseas embassies, and the B2B Matchmaking Program that works to promote U.S. firearms businesses and products to foreign delegates throughout the SHOT Show.

The third component to the IBP is the SHOT Show’s International Trade Center. Here, breakfast, lunch and an afternoon reception are held each official show day. Private conference rooms are available for meetings, and hostesses are available to assist with scheduling. There is an emphasis on creature comforts—complimentary WiFi Internet access, full computer setups with printer capabilities, multi-language translators, and other amenities that make traveling abroad easier—as well that of providing privacy and quiet space away from the bustle of the show floor. More central to making the International Trade Center truly productive for our overseas friends, the center offers something to “both sides of the coin.” For international buyers, experts in U.S.-based firearms manufacturers and distributors are on hand to help identify the exhibitors and products that best match those buyers’ needs and arrange introductions. For the exhibitor, trade specialists from the U.S. Department of Commerce help our U.S.-based businesses identify potential new markets and arrange in-person meetings with the buyers attending those markets.

The feedback we’ve received from both overseas attendees and our U.S. exhibitors participating in the IBP program has been nothing short of glowing and that tells us that NSSF is hitting the mark when it comes to providing a return on the often significant investment in time and money it takes to attend our SHOT Show each year, both for our own U.S. exhibitors and member attendees, but especially for those traveling from abroad. If you’ve participated in either of the last two IBP programs, tell us what you received from the experience and elements you’d like to see added to the program. If you’d like to participate in the program for the first time, we’d welcome the opportunity to provide you additional information and add you to our growing list of participants.

Increasing International Buyer Attendance at SHOT Show

A key aspect of the strategic plan approved the National Shooting Sport Foundation Board of Governors is to increase international buyer attendance at the SHOT Show and, in doing so, increase sales opportunities for SHOT Show exhibitors and international retailers and wholesale distributors alike. In response to this directive, the SHOT Show team has exhibited at the IWA & Outdoor Classics Show – specifically the International Weapons Exhibition (Internationale Waffenausstellung) – in Nuremburg, Germany each year since 2011.

Our attendance at this event is already paying dividends with international buyer attendance increasing each year. Our focus continues to be to educate IWA buyers on the breadth and reach of our exhibitors, in addition to offering them a chance to enjoy a first-rate U.S. city like Las Vegas. To that end, Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority and Las Vegas Sands Corp. partnered with NSSF to increase our exhibit size and to sponsor a well-received SHOT Show hospitality suite. We are grateful to Craig Erlanger of LVCVA and Kent Stanton of LVS who were on hand to provide venue and location details to prospective international attendees.

Attending the IWA Show is one way we seek to attract more qualified international buyers to benefit exhibitors at the SHOT Show. We also had the opportunity to visit with many of our current exhibitors and supporters of the SHOT Show. Acceptance of the 2014 SHOT Show into the International Buyer Program, which offers Department of Commerce assistance in recruiting qualified buyers resulted in 23 international delegations attending the SHOT Show for the very first time.  I’m pleased to report that SHOT Show has been accepted into the International Buyer Program for 2015.

SHOT Show’s Presence at IWA Helping to Grow International Buyer Attendance

The SHOT Show team just returned from exhibiting at the 2012 IWA & Outdoor Classics Show — specifically the International Weapons Exhibition (Internationale Waffenausstellung) in Nuremburg, Germany.

While there, our focus was to educate IWA buyers on the breadth and reach of our exhibitors, in addition to offering them a chance to enjoy a first-rate U.S. city like Las Vegas. We also had the opportunity to visit with many of our current exhibitors and supporters of the SHOT Show.

In 2011, we exhibited at IWA for the first time and saw a 20 percent increase in qualified international buyer attendance. We’re looking for a similar increase in 2013 with the ultimate goal to double overall attendance by qualified international buyers. We are focusing these efforts on England, Germany, France, Spain, Italy and Australia to benefit SHOT Show exhibitors.

Attending IWA is but one component of our strategy to increase attendance of qualified international buyers. NSSF has also applied for the U.S. Department of Commerce International Buyer Program, in which Commerce Department officials promote attendance for the 2013 SHOT Show.

Greetings from Germany: SHOT Show Exhibiting at IWA Show

Greetings from the ancient city of Nürnberg in the Federal Republic of Germany, where the SHOT Show team is exhibiting at 2012 IWA & Outdoor Classics Show.

Why are we exhibiting at IWA?

A key element of the strategic plan approved the National Shooting Sport Foundation Board of Governors is to increase international buyer attendance at the SHOT Show. Doing so increases sales opportunities for SHOT Show exhibitors and international retailers and wholesale distributors alike.

Following our first year as an exhibitor at the 2011 IWA & Outdoor Classics Show, international attendance increased 20 percent at the 2012 SHOT Show.

Our message here is simple — the Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade Show (SHOT Show) and Conference is the largest and most comprehensive trade show for all professionals involved with the shooting sports, hunting and law enforcement industries. It is the world’s premier exposition of combined firearms, ammunition, law enforcement, cutlery, outdoor apparel, optics and related products and services.

The SHOT Show attracts buyers from all 50 states and more than 100 countries. It’s an event that you simply can’t miss. It’s the only place your can go to see everyone and everything you need to gain a competitive edge.

We invite IWA attendees to visit us at the USA Pavilion in Hall 5, Stand #136 to learn more about why you should consider attending the 2013 SHOT Show, Jan. 15-18, 2013. And as always NSSF members and SHOT Show exhibitors are welcome to stop by with any membership or SHOT Show questions. Auf Wiedersehen.

SHOT Show Exhibits at IWA Show in Germany

The National Shooting Sports Foundation and the SHOT Show just returned from exhibiting at the IWA Outdoor Show — specifically the International Weapons Exhibition (Internationale Waffenausstellung) in Nuremburg, Germany.

Attending the IWA Show is one component of our strategy to attract more qualified international buyers to benefit exhibitors at the SHOT Show. Though international attendance at the SHOT Show has increased over the last few years, our primary focus has been attracting qualified domestic retailers.

SHOT Show has been very conservative in its efforts to market to international buyers. Our primary goal has been to educate IWA buyers on the breadth and reach of our exhibitors, in addition to offering them a chance to enjoy a first-rate U.S. city like Las Vegas.

We hope to encourage them to add SHOT Show to their purchasing strategy. As many of you are aware, the IWA Show has participated in the SHOT Show for many years in the German Pavilion.

NSSF and SHOT Show have a three-year plan to exhibit at the IWA Show and gauge the increase in international attendance.
