HOW TO: Increase Your Visibility at the Show Using Social Media

The following article comes to us from Ashley Burgess, senior MARCOM manager for Laura Burgess Marketing:

INCREASE YOUR VISIBILITY USING SOCIAL MEDIA

SHOT Show is now the thirteenth largest trade show in the U.S. For our industry, it is the busiest time of year with new sales programs, new products, new people and new marketing campaigns. The show itself has become increasingly busy and for buyers and media people, almost impossible to cover in the four days allotted. As a marketer or business owner, you know about the media opportunities presented to all exhibitors by the NSSF; the press room, marketing opportunities, press conferences and more, but how can you expand your messaging to make sure everyone receives it and hears it above all the rest of the show chatter? Consider using social media tools to enhance your current public relations program. Besides building traditional press kits and releases, why not build a Facebook Fan page?

A Facebook Fan Page gives your company a direct connection to your end users. With the middle man cut out, you can receive instant feedback from your customers and provide them with immediate content. Consumers trust people and brands that they “know” and by reaching out to them in a space they use daily to interact with family, friends, even to get the news, will only benefit your company.

Yeah, yeah, you’ve heard it all before, but really, Facebook? Are my end users really there? You bet they are. Facebook recently hit 500 million users and continues to grow daily. The world is becoming increasingly more and more internet savvy and customers expect you to be where they interact – and these days that is on social networks. If you aren’t where your customer base is, you could be ignoring a crucial segment of your market.

Many people have the misconception that social networks are for high school and college kids who want to share what they did this weekend and find out where the next party is at. However, recent research shows that the fastest growing age bracket on Facebook is the 35-44 year old demographic, experiencing a 276.4% growth rate in over approximately 6 months. The 55+ demographic is right behind that, while the 25-34 demographic doubles every 6 months. You can’t afford to ignore numbers like that.

So how do you tap into Fan Pages, Twitter and YouTube to create a solid social media plan to make your company stick out at SHOT? Simple. It’s called buzz and social media sites are great at generating it. Prior to the show, create sneak peek videos and host them on YouTube. These don’t have to be Grade A movie quality videos. Honest, short clips from 2-5 minutes in length done with a hand held work just fine if you don’t have a big budget. Promote those videos through Facebook and Twitter and invite people to see and learn more about these products at your booth. Create a special promotion that is only promoted through those sites, perhaps something along the lines of come by our booth with code FACEBOOK and you’ll get a free XYZ. People love free stuff.

While at the show, use your social media platforms to keep attendees and those who aren’t able to come informed about what is going on at your booth. Have a special demonstration going on? Tweet out the location and time to increase potential foot traffic at your booth and post pictures and videos from the actual demonstration on your Fan Page and YouTube account so people know what they missed. Want to host an impromptu cocktail hour with writers? Send out a “Tweet Up” through Twitter with a time and location and see how many people show up to meet you and talk about your product. Keep the content coming while you’re at the show and you’ll be keeping people informed and interested. Consider even doing a Daily Wrap Up email blast which provides information on the activities that went on at your booth for the day.

When the show wraps up, it doesn’t mean your social media efforts are over as well. Post wrap up information on Facebook. Direct your followers where to find more information through Twitter. Create a wrap up video and host it on YouTube. Perhaps you’d like to find out what people enjoyed most and least about your booth and product. If so, create a poll or survey through your Fan Page and get the answers you need to improve your booth for next year.

Social media is not going anywhere. It is here to stay and savvy businesses are using these tools to continue to build communities by which they can build brand loyalty, shorten sales cycles, improve customer service and communicate to their customers in an honest, immediate fashion. But beware, social media PR is unlike traditional PR in that it requires constant monitoring and participation. There are programs out there to help you monitor your sites and the end result is worth it; you’ll see that result in your bottom line. Contact a public relations company in our industry that can guide you down the new media path and see how talking with your customers before, during and after the show will increase your brand share and sales.

Wrap-up from the latest SHOT Show Chat

Thanks to everyone who participated in our second live chat.

Many of the questions focused on booth selection, floor-plan layout and our plans for enhancing the customer experience.

NSSF, Reed Exhibitions and the Sands Expo & Convention Center have been working on improving that experience.

Our SHOT Show committee will conduct a site inspection in Las Vegas in early October, so we can see the renovations first-hand. When we return, we’ll host another live chat to report on our findings, and I hope to post a few pictures as well.

If you missed the chat, you can view it at nssf.org/shotshowchat.

Got your badge scanned at an exhibitor’s booth? Retrace your steps at the 2010 SHOT Show with ‘Encore’

You saw an interesting product at the SHOT Show, but you lost the notes you took and the handouts the exhibitor gave you.  That and other scenarios where you'd like to retrace your steps at the 2010 show can be addressed by Encore, a reverse lead retrieval system.

This complimentary service provides show attendees with contact information on all of the exhibitors they visited. If your badge was scanned at an exhibitor booth, that information should be in the database.

Every attendee who had his or her badge scanned should have already received e-mails inviting the recipient to click on a link in the e-mail that would provide access to that individual's personal list of exhibitors visited.

If you no longer have access to those e-mails, and you'd like to obtain contact information on the exhibitors you visited at the show, send an e-mail to inquiry@shot.reedexpo.com

A look at today’s SHOT Show chat; Transcript available for viewing

We held our first-ever live chat this afternoon amid the second "storm of the century" this month.

It was originally scheduled to run for 30 minutes and we extended it for 15 more minutes twice due to the volume of questions.

In all we received 97 questions/comments, answered 26 of the questions and posted a few comments.

Many of the questions were duplicates pertaining to Las Vegas, the Sands Expo & Convention Center and other potential venues.

Our plan is to download all the questions and post answers to those that we didn't get a chance to get to. And we'll definitely schedule another SHOT Show live chat later in the year.

If you missed the chat, you can view it at nssf.org/shotshowchat.

Map Your Show: Online App a Handy Way to Plan Your SHOT Show Schedule

Did you know you can "MapYourShow" right from the comfort of your computer?

Map Your Show

At shotshow.org, the 2010 Floor Plan Navigator allows you to review the entire SHOT Show layout, search the entire list of exhibitors, search their products and get a facility overview. Then you can map out your own planned schedule and route with the My Show Planner feature.

Here's a round-up of the application's features, and how to best utilize them:

Search the Show

Using the search types provided, you can pinpoint exactly who you want to see at the show. To see all search options, roll over the "Search the Show" tab at the top left corner of the page and select the option that best fits your needs.

  • Search by Featured Exhibitors: View the Featured Exhibitors to see detailed product displays, descriptions and/or live flash or video presentations.
  • Search by Exhibitor: An alphabetical search by exhibitor name. Type a portion of the name or search using the on-screen keyboard by first letter of exhibitor name
  • Search by Product: Use our extensive product category search to discover all of the companies who offer the products you're interested in.

On the bottom left of the floor plan, use the zoom tool at any point to enlarge the floor plan. When scrolling over booths on the floor plan, the exhibitor name and booth number will appear. Clicking on the actual booth displays additional exhibitor information.

Build your Personal My Show Agenda

The My Show Agenda Planner is the best way to get organized for the show. Start researching which exhibitors you need to see, and save yourself and your feet many steps in the process. Click on the 'My Show Planner' icon to learn about the features within the Agenda Planner. The sign up form will appear at the top of the screen; click on 'Create New Account' to get started.

To build your agenda, use the search options at the top left to find the companies in which you're interested. Select the exhibitor's name to view more details about the company on the floor plan and add directly to your agenda by selecting the "add to MyShow Planner" button. Exhibitors can also be added directly from within the list of search results by checking the corresponding box next to the exhibitor name.

Optionally, you can quickly create your list by selecting 'Profile Wizard' from the My Show page; and stepping through the Wizard. This option allows you to select a category and simply add all of the companies who are exhibiting this product.

When your agenda is ready, click print and have a handy list of the exhibitors you added to your agenda. All exhibitors in your agenda will be highlighted on the floor plan printout to save you time at the show.
