Improvements Being Made to SHOT Show Press Room

Media at the 2011 SHOT Show will notice several improvements to the show’s press room. Not only will the room be five times the size of last year’s press room, but there will also be some new features that are sure to please our growing contingent of working press.

The following update comes from Mark Thomas, NSSF’s managing director, marketing communications:

As the wind gets cooler and the leaves start to change, we have already begun planning what should be the best SHOT Show ever. The world’s largest firearms and ammunition trade show will take place in Las Vegas at the Sands Expo and Convention Center January 18-21. We had a record number of media attend last year’s event and more media than attend the NHL’s Stanley Cup and the NBA Finals. That being said, there are many significant improvements planned for this year’s SHOT Show press room. For starters, the press room will be in the Murano Ballroom on the third floor, which is a space that is over five times larger than last year’s press room. Secondly, the press room will have a “working” press area designed to help media write and file stories with minimal distractions. Thirdly, we will provide coat check and storage areas for press badge holders. Fourth, we will organize media and press kits in an orderly and professional manner by providing wall shelves similar to large mail slots for press materials. These will make gathering materials easier and keep the room looking professional.

In the next week or so, you will be receiving information on how to register. We strongly recommend using our convenient online registration system to cut down on your wait time to gain credentials and make your show as productive and efficient as possible. We look forward to seeing you in January at the 2011 SHOT Show, and please don’t hesitate to contact us for story ideas.

The Venetian Receives M&C Gold Awards for Fourth Straight Year

We were pleased to learn that our SHOT Show partner The Venetian Resort-Hotel-Casino has been honored for the fourth year in a row with “elite” status for the Gold Key and Gold Platter awards.

The prestigious honor was awarded by Meetings and Conventions magazine for 2010 based on voters’ experiences.

The Venetian is the only property in Las Vegas to consistently receive the “elite” status over the past four years; the Venetian has won the Gold Key award 11 years in a row and the Gold Platter award nine years in a row.

The Gold Key award recognizes the property for staff attitude, quality of meeting rooms, quality of guest services, quality of food and beverage service, proficiency of handling reservations, technical/support equipment and range of recreational facilities, while the Gold Platter award recognizes the resort’s catering department for excellence displayed in creativity and culinary experience through staff enthusiasm and professionalism, quality of food presentation, creativity of menu, originality of theme-party concepts, helpfulness and budgeting considerations, excellence of staff service and dining room ambiance.

Congratulations to The Venetian Resort-Hotel-Casino!

Attendee Registration to Open First Week of September

Online attendee registration will be available at www.shotshow.org starting the first week of September.

We encourage all attendees to register in advance of the show.

One advantage to registering for the show in advance is the convenience of having your badge mailed to you ahead of time.

If you choose to wait and register on site, you will end up paying more and you also risk spending time standing in line that could be better spent on the show floor.

We look forward to seeing you all at the 2011 SHOT Show.

Got your badge scanned at an exhibitor’s booth? Retrace your steps at the 2010 SHOT Show with ‘Encore’

You saw an interesting product at the SHOT Show, but you lost the notes you took and the handouts the exhibitor gave you.  That and other scenarios where you'd like to retrace your steps at the 2010 show can be addressed by Encore, a reverse lead retrieval system.

This complimentary service provides show attendees with contact information on all of the exhibitors they visited. If your badge was scanned at an exhibitor booth, that information should be in the database.

Every attendee who had his or her badge scanned should have already received e-mails inviting the recipient to click on a link in the e-mail that would provide access to that individual's personal list of exhibitors visited.

If you no longer have access to those e-mails, and you'd like to obtain contact information on the exhibitors you visited at the show, send an e-mail to inquiry@shot.reedexpo.com

SHOT Show Directory Available in Hard and Digital Copies

Although the Official Directory and Buyers Guide is an invaluable resource for people attending the SHOT Show, its additional worth has been established as a year-round reference.

It lists all of the show’s exhibitors, along with a description of each exhibitor, a list of its key representatives in attendance and contact information for the company, including mailing address, telephone numbers, including toll-free numbers where offered, fax number and Web site URL.

This 384-page volume is available by contacting Bettyjane Swann, NSSF Director, Member Services, at bswann@nssf.org, telephone 203-426-1320.

A single copy can be provided to each NSSF voting member for free.  Other NSSF members may purchase copies at $20. Non-members of NSSF may buy copies through Swann at $50 each.

New for this year is a digital edition of the directory and buyers guide.  It is available online for free to all registered attendees of the 2010 show. Attendees may access it with the their user name (his or her e-mail address) and the password shotshow2010.

Update from the Sands on improvements being made for next year’s SHOT Show

We have asked the Sands Expo & Convention Center to provide our exhibitors and attendees with regular updates on improvements the facility is making for next year's SHOT Show.

We at NSSF appreciate everyone's feedback and we will continue to work closely with the Sands to ensure next year's show is second to none.

The following is a letter from Sands management:

The Sands Expo & Convention Center was very proud to play host to your 2010 SHOT Show this year.  Thank you for the opportunity to be a part of such an exciting and successful event.

In anticipation of your return in 2011, we are pleased to announce some exciting changes and building improvements coming your way in hopes of creating an even better experience for you in the future.

We have listened to your suggestions and realize it may have been difficult to find your way around a 2 million square foot facility for the first time.  Therefore we have created a new signage program for you with large directionals in numerous new locations, making it simpler to find restrooms, food outlets, exits, adjacent meeting space and more.

Also once you find those restrooms you will discover they have a whole new look.  Yes they are getting a facelift.  During the upcoming year, The Sands has many exciting upgrades scheduled to delight you on your next visit.   I will keep you posted as we move along.

We look forward to sharing our new look with you as we prepare to host your SHOT Show in 2011.

Response to power outage at Sands at close of SHOT Show

We've received some questions from exhibitors on a power outage that occurred at the Sands after the close of the 2010 SHOT Show.

The following is a response from Karen Haigh, senior director of operations for Reed Exhibitions, which manages the SHOT Show for NSSF:

As if the 2010 SHOT Show wasn't exciting enough, at the close of this year's SHOT Show, some of you who stayed that night to pack up might have noticed something out of place.

About 45 minutes into the return of the firearm crates and containers, the lights went out. We thought it would be helpful for you to understand what exactly did happen and how we handled it.

A forklift driver was working on a special request to move a crate from one level to another. The shortest distance between two points involved a transformer with a power line on a telephone pole. Unfortunately, this telephone pole provided power for most of the Sands Expo, and, even more unfortunately, the power cable inside the conduit was accidentally hit by a forklift blade. Fortunately, the fork lift driver kept his cool in a very hot situation and survived to tell his tale.

The Sands Expo Building Engineer had just gotten home and was looking forward to a relaxing Friday evening. Century Security immediately jumped into action and temporarily stopped all traffic going in or out of doors in order to keep control until the situation had been assessed.

Keeping tabs on 12,000 firearms with no lights operating was on the top of their mind as was the safety of individuals on the show floor. Show management, Sands Expo management and Freeman all worked together with Century, and, very shortly after, allowed people to leave the building.

Now keep in mind that the freight doors hadn't opened yet and needed to open (usually electronically) in order to complete the return of the firearm crates. A couple of select freight doors were opened by using forklifts so that the firearm crates could continue.

Until the lights came back on, it would not be safe to let labor onto the show floor because an accident was sure to happen.

Remember the Sands Building Engineer who was enjoying getting home for the weekend? He was out the door in a flash and back on property in record time. His team worked furiously with the power company to get the lights and power restored. At about 6:30 p.m., labor was immediately let onto the show floor and move-out continued.

Since then, protective barriers have been placed around the telephone pole and power line, and emergency lighting has been upgraded.
